Brand that is best?

What shampoo and conditioner brand is best for my horses mane and tail when I can only bathe him the day before a show? I'm not going to invest in Mane n' Tail because it's too expensive. So besides that what do you think is the best brand. I picked up VO5 at Wal-Mart because it was on sale for $1. Will that work?
I've also heard that there is one brand that makes your horse smell bad? Do you know what it was? I think it's Herbal Essences, not sure though.

id be carefull using a non animal shampoo on the body.. the tail is one thing but we have had horses have allergic reactions to some shampoos and ends up in alot more expensive vet bills then what you would have spent on mane and tail.. id personally just suck it up and buy a horse shampoo rather then risk it for the body at least.. but when in doubt id go for j&j baby shampoo

Usually we use Suave on our horses, but that's also expensive and I don't always have a lot of money.

Vetrolin is my favorite brand. I would also say, just go to your local coap and buy in balk so it is cheeper

What ever is on sale at WAL MART or DOLLAR GENERAL

Eqyss products are great! they are anti-bacterial as well so if your horse has an itch, it will scratch it! lol

Mane n Tail is expensive? Hmm, its one of the cheapest brands of shampoo I know. I used it for awhile on myself, great stuff.
You can also try using baking soda and vinegar mix. Just be sure to use more vinegar than baking soda and dilute it with water.

I know this may sound expensive but in the end you really save on product. I bought one of the eZall foaming tools for around $30. I'm normally a very frugal (cheap) person, but I have to say its one of the best 30 bucks I've spent. You can use any type of shampoo in it, dilute it with water and you use at least half of what you would use with a normal bucket and water.
Its easy to remove the foamer part, then you just have a gentle jet sprayer to rinse with.
I buy the big gallon jugs of Citronella shampoo (around $12) from the feed store. I figure that way it kills two birds (bugs) with one bath. One of those will last all summer for 4 horses.

I personally wouldn't use human shampoo on a horse's mane, tail, or coat, but if you absolutely have to, use baby shampoo. It's the mildest and rinses out easily. Human conditioner works alright, but I'd still prefer the equine variety. I use Sore-No-More shampoo. It smells like coconut, rinses out realllly quickly and easily, and leaves them with a gorgeous sheen. It alsos includes liniment, so it's like getting a nice, cooling massage for your horse! Cowboy Magic works well too, it's especially formulated for cold water baths. For conditoner, I use Eqyss Cloud Nine. It makes my geldings tail feel like silk!

I use cowboy magic and then showsheen.

Human wise, I use Suave or Mane and Tail because well I always thought it was super cheap.
