As far as clipping that doesn't involve show rules, I think it should be what looks best on that horse.
I could never picture my TWH with the mane that hangs on both sides, clipped back an ear's worth. He is also a lot thicker-built than the other two TWH's which, I think, would not show his neck as attractively. I dunno - I'm nearsighted so I could be seeing things all wrong
When my Arab was young I used to clip his mane back nearly a foot and he looked exceptionally handsome. He's now 26 and doesn't quite possess the sinewy neck of his youth but still has a thick and long mane. I clip him an ear's worth and he still looks quite striking
