Is his mane really thick? If it is thick that could be why it isn't staying on one side....you might have to pull it to thin it a bit and then try braids again.
Also how big of braids are you doing? I have had better luck with doing more little braids then a few big braids. And it just takes time....I usually braid it super tight, put a styling gel on and leave it in for a week, take it out and rebraid. I do that for at least 4 weeks then see how well it is training over. If it is still trying to flip I will keep putting it in braids until it stays on one side.
