To Clip or not to Clip?

So, It's coming up on summer and it usually gets really hot where I live. I want to ride my horse a lot but I've never considered clipping him...I've always loved how horses look when they are clipped. Fritz gets really sweaty, even when I taken him just for a short hack :P

So what do you guys suggest? If I did clip him I don't think I would do a full body clip, probably a high or low trace clip. We don't seem to get a lot of bugs, so i don't think bugs would be to much of a problem.

Assuming he sheds down to a nice short summer coat there's really no reason to clip. He's not going to look any different either.

Aside from bugs you'll also have the sun beating down on his bare skin.

Usually you clip in the winter, not summer. Horses almost always shed out to a nice short summer coat, so there's really no need. It's hard to prevent sweaty horses in the summer in general, but that's what nice cold hose downs after a workout are for :)

I give my pony a full body clip around March/April every year. But that's only because she doesn't shed out.

As long as your horse sheds on his own I don't see the point in clipping this time of year (minus touch ups for shows, etc.)

For a horse with Cushings or an older horse with a thicker coat (probably also Cushing's)

I would clip. Or for a tip top in heavy work show horse, otherwise don't clip in the summer. It's pointless. I guarantee your horse will sweat just as much if you do clip
