I'm thinking about clipping my gelding but I'm not sure whether or not to, he's a Canadian horse so he grows quite the heavy coat in the winter and I plan on working him regularly throughout the winter. He's already started to grow his coat and he's been sweating way more than usual because of the coat. I was planning on just doing the underbelly and neck clip. I am just wondering if he'll be too cold during the winter, he lives outside during the day and goes in his stall at night but it's not heated at all. He wears a blanket all winter long, he usually doesn't need it though till about mid October. Right now overnight it drops down to up 9 degrees Celsius and goes up to about 16 Celsius during the day, would I need to start blanketing him right away if I did clip him?

Welcome to the forum, love to hear from another Canadian owner :D Please post pics if you're comfortable with it! I love Canadians <3

As for clipping, if you plan on working him into a sweat he should be clipped. I personally don't blanket my Canadian until it gets below 25 degrees Fahrenheit (not sure the translation to Celsius sorry) she grows a wicked winter coat and even gets sweaty if it gets over that temp.
If I were you I'd clip, then blanket and just keep checking, if he feels hot take it off, find out what temps he's comfortable in. Problem with belly clips is that it lets the heat out, which is what you want for exercise, but not for keeping them warm :P

I'm no expert though, I never clip, but I also don't ride them till they're sweaty, they're just pleasure horses. So someone else may have better advice - I just love Canadians ^^
