    Ear question

So a lot of people I know trim the hair inside their horse's ears. I usually trim my mares if it gets really long but how short should it be? Im always afraid if I trim to short that the hair will fall into her ear. This is probably a stupid question lol.

I just get it all in one good swipe, instead of going over and over several times, so I worry less about the hair falling inside the ear. I have put cotton ear balls in too, to keep the small ones from falling through the canal, except you can't always get the botton of the ear, you get a chunk of cotton instead. But the clippers I have, have little plastic attachments so you can regulate how much comes off, and I just use the medium length ones for ears. I leave plenty of hair in there, I just clean up everything fluffy and that sticks out. Some people like it all gone, but I prefer to leave some in there, just shorter, for protection purposes.

I leave my horses ears alone. Hair is necessary to protect against bugs, rain, etc. I do clean them carefully though about twice a month =)

Thanks guys. I sort of do the same thing that DejaVu does. I usually leave a lot of hair inside the ear for protection and only trim it once it gets longer and starts to stick out of her ear.

My uncle is a trainer and her recently got hired to train a 2 year old mare and the owner wanted him to keep hair inside of her ear really short. I was sort of confused at first because I had always let mine grow fairly long before trimming them. It made me question myself
