Easy way to get her from moving her head is get a hay net fill it and tie it front of her that'll keep her plenty busy for awhile lol

Is there a rule to how many braids you need to have?

Depends where in the world you are. Traditionaly in the UK and any showing system based on the UK one you want an odd number between 7 and 13 up the mane and one in the forelock. You can also make use plaits to create an optical illusion to make the neck look better if you have a weak neck, a too short/too long neck or a neck that lacks top line etc.

In the UK the horse in the video posted by equiniphile would be laughed out of the ring!

Woah.. I'm sorry, I don't do button braids, I do hunter braids. But, the bands you did were a little funny looking.. I found a video on youtube on how to do button braids that I thought looked good!

Also, never start from the withers up.. always start from the top of the neck, down to the withers. And, your braids will get bigger because the mane tends to get thicker in the middle. I think for button braids, you want them to be bigger anyway? I don't know, but that video looks great with a nice turnout!

Here in SA it's quite stupid... It cannot exceed 13 including the forelock.

Shaggy, thanks for the tip... when the new shipment of hay comes in from Mozambique I'll be able to do that, but for the moment I can't lol.

Ok so, I braided again on Saturday, but I could'nt get pics... I'll take lots this weekend because I'm sleeping over there so I can bath her and clean tack.

I threaded it, but my instructor soon took over after I ended up stabbing myself like 8 times in the neck lol, so we have a deal: I seperate the mane, she braids, I roll it, she sews it in, and I put the tape on the make it look pretty...

I will definitely take pics this weekend :)

Haha sounds like good team work :P

I heard you shouldn't wash before you plait as it gets to slippery and to hard to plait....
Never tried so not to sure.
What would you be doing with her tail??
