Question Hoof Black...how to make it not ruin lives??

I used to put hoof black on Comet for showing, but I stopped because it is impossible to store.
I manage to get it on him neatly, but you can't wash the brush without it getting on your hands and everywhere.
Then when you aren't using it, the bottle leaks and it gets everywhere. It also gets on the lid and sticks shut.

Is there a secret for keeping it contained?

Riders aren't 16 and pregnant. Riders are 16 and arthritic.

Put the jar of hoof black in a coffee can or similar container and make sure it stays upright. It shouldn't leak if it stays upright and if it does manage to get knocked over then it leaks inside the can. It won't stain your groom bag, trailer or where ever you keep it.

As for cleaning the brush, don't worry about it. Just make sure your horse's hooves are as clean as possible before applying it and you won't have to clean the brush unless you drop it in the dirt. :)

I haven't used hoof black but I have used paint on hoof moisturizers. If you apply to a clean hoof and stand them on a piece of cardboard when you apply it, it won't get any dirt on the brush AND it won't get the hoof black (or whatever you are painting on) all over the floor to get tracked through. I have a piece of cardboard tucked away in my tack room for just that purpose.

I am assuming you are using the product that comes with a dauber built in the cap? You don't need to clean the dauber when you are done. Also, I always wear those disposable latex gloves when I use that stuff and I put vaseline on the neck of the container, makes it easy to open and easy to twist tight as can be. Never been a problem, I have using hoof black for decades.
