Horse hacked off most of his tail...

Herbie has kind of started hanging out with the trouble makers in the field and he and his friends broke the fence and ran into the other gelding's field. He got some cut, but it looks like he as cut a few inches off of most of his tail  The part that was cut is even at about his hock, with about a quarter of his tail hanging below (mid cannon bone maybe). It's not exactly the most attractive thing to look at, but I don't know what to do with it. I really don't want to have to bang it since I do H/J

I've been using mtg, but I really don't want to braid it and put it up because I don't come everyday (4 or 5 days a week) and when I do (except for weekends) I don't have enough time to care for a tail (stupid homework and college applications eat up my nights)

I'll get a picture tomorrow if my camera is working...

You may not have much of a choice. The way I'm thinking without pics you either a) bang it -or- b) pull the tail straight out perhaps even a little up...then cut it off evenly, which, hopefully will layer the bottom of the tail making it look "natural" but short.
