"Shop-Vac" is actually the brand name of one of those heavy duty canister vacuums for use in shops and garages. "Shop vac" has become a generic term as well as a brand name. I'm not sure if they are a US thing or world wide, or what they are called in other countries. They have a longer hose and have stronger suction than a "house vacuum" and they are made to pick up heavier, dirtier gunk and survive.
And if you put the hose on the "exhaust" connector, you can use them for a leaf/dust blower for your barn aisles.
