I did the unthinkable today: I finally hacked off her mane

Before, at 3' long:

After:

Maintaining that mane was probably the most difficult thing in my life, and ultimately it occurred to me that she was inevitably being treated like a mane with a horse attached to it instead of the other way around, so I decided it was finally time to give it back to her.
I cut it to this length for now, but I may go shorter depending on how maintenance goes. I just don’t want her to have to live in braids 24/7 anymore.

It had grown over a half a foot in the 2 1/2 years I’ve worked with her.
To maintain its length, health, and growth rate, it was kept braided at all times, taken out for one day every other week or so, usually bathed (where it took about a quarter of a large Micro Tek shampoo and Cowboy Magic conditioner bottle per bath), then I applied MTG to the roots before thoroughly coating it in detangler and hand-picking it out (brushing it very gently with fingers only) and re-braided in 5 braids. Her forelock received the same treatment and was put into two braids.

I'm pretty sad about it, but now I’ll just have that much time to spend riding and working with her, and she’ll be a lot more comfortable without those itchy braids in, whipping her in the neck every time she shakes her head. It was really enjoyable to have while it lasted, but we’re ready to move on now.

Anyway, I just wanted to share, because I haven't posted here in ages!

Unfortunately for me I cannot understand your pain......my horse has a dental floss tail and not much more for a mane.....I don't touch either of them and he still manages to rub his mane out or snag his tail......all the while having a beautiful shiny coat!!!

She still looks lovely!!!

She looks good either way. Is she a Haflinger? Because if she is, her mane will probably grow long before you know it even if you don't spend a lot of time maintaining and braiding it.

I would love to take your problem! Haha. My girls mane isn't awful, but I think it was done gaining length before I got her. I'm a hair person (cosmetologist in training) so I would love to have all that mane to work with.
She's adorable either way though. You have a pretty horse!

Thanks guys! Yes she is half Haflinger (lol I always have to laugh saying that) and half Arab. Her Arab mama's hair was so-so. Her mane seems to be half-way between the two. She's 11, and was 9 when I got her. Her mane was long, slightly longer than the length I cut it to, but very sparse at the ends. It breaks pretty easily. Her individual hairs are pretty thin and fragile, but she just has a ton of them.
Because of that, I'm expecting it will probably start breaking off a lot at the ends without the protection of the braids, but that's okay, I know she still has pretty great hair and even if she didn't she'd still be the prettiest gal at the barn.

I do plan to maintain it at a short enough length where it won't get crazy tangled all the time though. Whenever I'd take it down from the braids and leave it for just a day, it would get so thoroughly tangled up, and she lives in a stall so that's a feat! So I may end up having to take it shorter than I have to keep that from happening.
