MTG didn't do much for me.. I used it consistently for about a year, hoping something would happen, but his tail just got nastier and nastier. I got more growth, but the actual health of his tail just dropped.
I started using coconut oil, and it does what I was hoping to get out of the MTG. A soft, shiny, zero breakage, thicker tail. You might try both and see what works for you. Some people get greatness out of MTG, but I got it out of coconut oil...
The smell of MTG isn'ttoo obvious after awhile, depending on how often you apply it, but I found it never fully soaked into the hairs, and left it greasy, and constantly attracted to dirt. Coconut oil soaks in deeper and faster than any other oil I've used. Plus there's really no odor to it.
For occasional conditioning, after I shampoo it, I'll fully coat his tail in warm olive oil, loosely braid it, let it sit for as long as possible, (I'll just hand graze him while the rest of his coat dries. So I let it soak for 30 minutes or so.) then shampoo it back out. It does a healthy job to his tail as well.
Try as best as you can, to stay away from heavy silicone products, and the heavy oils that don't soak in well.
I try to use nothing but coconut oil on his tail, but whenever I do have to use something, Cowboy Magic or the Marigold spray from Eqyss, is usually what I go to.
I brush his tail, and don't have a problem, but then again, his tail is super hydrated from the oil, so I don't worry about it. I just make sure I take it slow from bottom to top, and it's all good.
