Keep braids for long time

I braided my mares manes so they would stay on one side of the neck (heck, it didn't do the trick on my qh completely last year, but I'm giving it a try anyway again). So my question is one week for braids is too long? Can I run into any issues with hair if it's braided for while? I just did it like couple days back.

I braided one of the horses where I work then turned him out into the field for the weekend without thinking. He was fine but the knotts were quite bad after a weekend in the open air. My advice is to keep them in stables for the week so you can keep an eye on them. Its a good idea though, better than hogging them.

It doesn't matter how long you keep it in, just keep it in long enough - a week or two is fine. I did the same with my mare.

Thanks for sharing, folks!

I don't care about knots much - last year I had nothing there, and I keep checking every night now and they don't look messy or anything (I used detangler just before I braided though).

I know a PRE stud with mane down to his knees and so thick they have to part it in the middle. He has to be braided all the time in order to keep his mane out of the way and untangled. They have his mane braided all the time except for when he is at shows and it is totally fine.
