I use Show Sheen. You can get it at a local tack store or online. I believe it's made by Absorbine? Not sure. MTG also works ok. Smells like bacon grease though, and it's easy to get too much on so the mane and tail look slightly greasy. Or, you could just get a bottle of regualar human detangler at a dollar store somewhere.

THIS IS CHEAP and homemade!

Ingredients:

Calgon Bath Oil Beads(dry)...you can get this practically anywhere and it's very reasonably priced.

Water

Mix the calgon with water(one part calgon to 3 parts water) in a spray
bottle. Spray on mane and tail to help recondition. Also works well on knots:applu liberally and work out the knot with a comb and a stiff brush.

My mares tail was a mess when we first got her, so we had to cut part of it out. Terrible, I know, I've heard! LOL But you couldn't tell as she still has all this left...

So I put MTG in it every so often to help it grow, I think you can put it in once a week or every 4 days or something but I don't worry about it with her tail because it grows so fast and I am ALWAYS trimming it so she doesn't step on it backing up. You can see how uneven the hair in her tail is here though...since it was on the underside it's not too noticeable

But anyway, I put baby oil in her tail once in a while so I can get a brush through it. I don't do it too often, just whenever her tail is feeling dry or I can't brush it which isn't often. When it's really muddy out and I can, I'll put her tail in a tail bag so the end doesn't get muddy and dried out. I really don't put much effort into her tail though, I don't need to, it p*sses me off anyway! Hahah

No problem. The calgon will make the mane and tail smell pretty as well.

I HATE putting ShowSheen in the mane and tail. I won't do it. It weighs the hairs down, and just looks bad, IMO. I only ever spray it on a rag and rub it on their bodies to give them a shine. For manes and tails, I swear by ethnic hair products. They detangle, smell great, repel dirt, and give the hairs a nice shine. Baby oil is nice, too, but do it in VERY small amounts, or it'll get greasy.

Wash the tail. I use Suave shampoo and conditioner. When done, spray some show sheen in it and leave it to dry. The next day spray it again with show sheen and brush through it. You'll have a luscious tail every time. :)
