    Knotty Tail Problems!

Both my mare (AQHA) and my gelding (Pure Morgan) have really knotty tails. They look almost like their tails have dreadlocks in them. It's mostly underneath the top layer of hair. They are SUPER hard to untangle, also. I have used cowboy magic on my mare and they seemed to come out really nicely, but then they come back a few days later. I haven't even attempted lately to get them out of my gelding's tail, as they are SO BAD!

So my question is if any of y'all have had this problem and if you know a long-term solution to keeping their tails nice and thick without the dreads.

I recently gotten one of those tail bag things and I plan on using it full time in the summer on my gelding...
Thank you in advance for the advice

Yeah I have had tails with that very same thing. The hair shafts have a bit of a curl in them and I have found it worse in hair that is thick and course. Keeping the tail braided and bagged does help with this problem greatly.

I agree w the other posters, however, I use vetrolin on my haffie's main and tail. It gets the worst out fast and pretty much keeps it out. It is silicon based.

I will definitely look for it next time I go horsey shopping! Thanks! :)

I won't use anything with silicone since it dries it out. I use this.
Healthy Haircare Moisturizer | Dover Saddlery

Love this stuff, and it is cheaper than cowboy magic, since you dilute it and spray it on. I also would suggest the braiding up for the winter, and you can braid it in summer also. I personally put the moisturizer on then braid it up. I did it last week, and it will stay in until March or so. As long as it is below the tail bone it is fine.

My qh had a huge rat's nest in his tail and cornstarch worked best for getting it untangled.

I've always used tail bags. If you do it the right way they will stay in for a long time; you just have to watch the hair in the top part above the tail bag because it usually gets knotted after awhile. But that's the best solution.

It is probably not recommended, but I use children's hair detangler in tails. I try to only spray it on hair, not the skin of the tail bone or anything. I also loosely braid tails when it is muddy to help prevent knots. I've never had much luck with tail bags - the braid in ones stay on a bit better, but can be a hassle to apply.
