Long or Short?

I was wondering if I should keep my horse's mane growing out long, or cut it off for shows?

The shows I will be entering will be:
- western pleasure
- english pleasure
- trail
- possibly road hack
- possibly hunter under saddle
- maybe, possibly reining (if her legs are better then)

For western pleasure, normally it should be short, and for english it should be braided probably.
But, her mane takes forever to grow out, its 3/4 the way down to her neck line after cutting it off for shows early September.

I love the look of long manes and tails.

Would it be okay to have a long, natural mane in western pleasure? Or, banding it long, or doing a diamond pattern?

I don't know what the show guidelines are for western shows, but I know that for english, depending on the rating, you'll likely have to braid, so the main is going to have to stay well pulled all season. What breed is your horse? If you have a specialty breed, you can sometimes get away with a running braid-but generally speaking for english you'll always want to stay braided.

MY OWN opinion is to leeeeaveee it. Long manes are sooooo beautiful.

Is it possible to braid the mane nicely when it's long? I know it would be a heck of a lot harder, but is it possible to do it, and have it look nice?
She is a quarter horse.
I love long manes too :( I'm excited to see how long it will be by the time shows come around next year If I go in reining, all of them have long flowing manes. In western pleasure they all have extremely short banded manes, and in english they have braids!
It's a mixture of them all :S haha

Thank you!

As much as a love long manes, I'd say pull it for your showing. A short mane can go for western (banding) and english (braiding). It'll be a lot less work maintaining it too if it's short!
BUT, if you are just doing small/club shows, it won't matter and you can keep it long :) so then it's up to you

^^ The one show is sort of a larger show, but lots of beginners go to it too. It's our fall fair, people from out of our province come to ride in it too. I mainly just go in it for fun, but I don't want the judge to not consider us just because of the way her mane is.
The other show I go in, is a riding club show, people of all levels go in it, and it's fairly small.

I was thinking something like this for western pleasure:

It might be possible to keep it natural for english pleasure?
If I go in the other english classes, I would braid it, but it might be near to impossible to do that with a long mane. Does anyone know any longer braids that might work for hunters or road hack?

Thanks!

I have shown Arabs off and on, and we always kept their manes long and natural and used a running braid for english shows. It looks kind of like this:

We always tied the long piece at the end of the braid up with a rubber band, though, but I doubt that really matters.

The braid takes some practice, but it looks just as nice as pulled and braided manes in my opinion. :) ...and as a plus, the mane is really pretty and wavy when you take it out!

I sometimes like long manes, but for ease of braiding, I'd keep her mane short during the show season and let it grow out afterwards. But then again, if you're only going to do a couple shows, then just keep her mane long and do some sort of fancier braid. Granted, it'll take time and practice, but I'm sure you won't mind if you only need to do it a few times. ;) I've done both ways before, but a shorter mane was always easier when showing.

All the western shows that I have gone too, they have had long manes. I know for english stuff they do braid them, but for the english stuff you listed I don't think it matters. Especially if its just a little local show. But you could do the running braid if you are sure for the english stuff. Banding is really cool for western though. That like the picture you showed. That is except able at western shows. It really depends on how fussy people are at the show and how their rules are.

I am pretty sure you can get away with I long main in western plearusre for most shows if you put some fancy beads in it or soomething it might make a difference too, and reigning you can deffinently have a long mian but you probably know that:)
