My chestnut has a BEAUTIFUL flaxen mane and tail, but it's rather thin. Any ideas on how to thicken it up? I've been reading some posts giving two thumbs up to MTG, but does it thicken? It could use some help growing. Same goes for his tail, it's thicker, but not to long.
His dam has a past-the-shoulder mane and ground sweeping tail but it's also rather thin. His sire once had a super long, thick mane (before his current owners got him, his previous owner roached it x-x) Also: Whats the most recommended product to give his coat a nice sheen? I'm already in love with his color, but his coat could you some shine enhancement. My sabino could also use some thicken/lengthen product, as well as something to give him more of a shine. Nothing that toys with his color though. I recently got a lovely little filly. She's a 'mystery color' right now even though she's a year old. She has a black mane and tail, and black stockings, and two hind socks. She has a star that has some slight roan. Right now she's in her faded brown winter coat, so I have no idea if she's going to be a bay or a black yet. Her previous owner called her a 'gray buckskin' (?) Her mane is really short and scraggly. Her tail really is not to much better. Is this a job for MGT? What other products are suggested? One more question... Is MGT winter safe? Or is it only a warm-weather product? (I don't have a warm barn to groom in, unfortunately)

As far as getting the mane and tail to thicken up, I think if you keep it trimmed it will grow in thicker. Don't cut it all off, just trim the very ends. It worked on my hair when I was little so it might work on a horse.

You can hog a horses mane and it'll grow back thicker... which, it'll take about two years for it to grow back out to a nice length (or so I've been told, as I hogged my girls mane in August...)
If you don't want to do that, then yes, MTG will also make the mane thicker as well as help it to grow out longer. 3-in-1 Machine Oil also helps a horses mane to grow longer and thicker, though it doesn't work as fast as MTG.

MTG is an excellent candidate to grow and thicken manes and tails. As far as adding shine to the coat, I swear by farnam super 14. It will make your horses hair feel like velvet and shine like nothing else. Everyone who sees my horses ask me what I feed them to make them so soft and shiny. It will dapple out just about any color horse. It will not drastically change any color but it will add some dapples and add tons of shine and softness. You can get it online for about 18.00 dollars for a 3lb tub, about a months supply. Tractor supply sells it also, but they want a ridiculous 27.00 dollars for a 3lb tub. The best thing to do with super 14 so you can see what it does is to pick the one horse with the worst coat and give it a try. If you like it one that horse then you can add the others. They also make it is a 6.5lb tub and a 20lb tub. If you feed it to a bunch of horses, 20lbs is the cheapest way to go. I think they are about 120.00 dollars.

As far as you filly goes, can you take a photo, I might be able to help you with a color even if she is in a winter coat right now. If she is a buckskin she should have a dorsal stripe as the majority of them do. If she is fairly uniform in color with just black legs and mane and tail, then she is most likely a bay. Generally a black horse will not go really brown unless they are in the sun all the time. I have a 14 month old I brought home that was really badly sunburnt and you can still tell he is jet black under all that sunburnt hair.

Use leave in conditioner and put his tail up in a bag, take it down after 3 weeks and apply some more and put it back up, It deffaintly works but it will take a couple months. My gelding grew like 3 extra inches and it made his tail thicker.
applying mtg to the tail every few days to the dock of the tail will also help make it grow thicker. |

This works much better than Vet wrap.
We do this , Then simply just tye a tail bag over it. http://equisearch.com/horses_care/he...ilwrap_071805/ then at the end make a mark at where ur tail was and you can keep track at how much it has grown.
