Mane and Mane pulling questions

My horse absolutely hates having his mane pulled. He shakes his head and backs up whenever I try to do it. I would like to just leave it be, but the show season is coming up and I have to do it. I recently ordered a mane trimmer/thinner comb online but am not sure how to use it. If anybody has tips for using it or how to make my pulling experience with my horse better, please let me know.

You may be pulling too many hairs at one time. I was taught 4 hairs and found that the horse will stand well for that. Problem was it usually turned into a two day job. To thin the mane, pull only the hairs from underneath. If shortening the mane still pull only 4 hairs at a time. Wrap it around the comb and give a quick tug. Our preference was for the aluminum combs designed for this.
