Talking Mane pulling

This is my first time ever pulling a mane

I'm going to trim it shorter and braid it for our show Sunday.
Should I pull it shorter first?

Definitely pull it to thin and shorten. The length of the mane should be just a tad longer than the width of your hand to be able to braid it easily.

I figured.
Should I pull it to a little longer than that, and then trim it to even it? Or just leave it after I pull it?
I know if you only pull it's more of a natural look.

I wouldn't trim it at all. I make it a rule to never touch a horse's mane with scissors. I just absolutely loathe the way it looks because it's so easy to do improperly.

I would just pull it to a good length and leave it.

I had experimented with the other horse I ride.. and... let's say it should probably be roached, it looks terrible

If you pull correctly then you do not need sissors.

As a rule sissors never go anywhere near my pony's mane. Makes it an absolute nightmare to plait and you get short spikey bits sticking out of your plaits

RIDE your horse FORWARDS and keep him STRAIGHT

Thank you guys, so much!
Just a question..
My mare's mane, starting at almost halfway fown her neck to her withers, the hair is really thin.
We have no idea why, but i'm afraif to pull it, because she only has half her hair there,
Ill put pictures up later today

Have you ever pulled a mane before?
It is possible to pull a mane and shorten it but not loose too much hair, but only if you know what you are doing.

No. My instructor taught me how.
It's just that my mare is bald under one section of her mane, so we didn't touch that spot.
It's really weird.
She has hair ontop, but not underneath that
