Need advice about braiding!

I'm button braiding my friend's mare for a big show in 2 weeks, and then another horse in 3 weeks. I've been practicing alot with bands. But I'm going to sew the braids. Any advice about what thread to use? I don't have time to order special plaiting thread...so I need a quick and cheap idea! Thanks! :)

Make sure the yarn doesn't match too well, just a bit off. Otherwise, you'll cut out half the mane looking for it!
