Picking Out a Tail

I grew up with a saddlebred breeder for a trainer and she cringed at the thought of ever brushing her horses' long tails. So, I learned early on about picking out tails. Not a lot of people in the hunter world are familiar with it, so they were always amazed when they saw Leia's tail afterwards xD

Showing
At a stable I rode at as a teen, we were taught to pick tails and could only finger comb. With manes it was the same. If a mane needed thinning it had to be flipped to the other side so the underside hairs (not on top) were pulled and wouldn't show as they grew back in.

Basically you take small sections of the tail, and little by little 'pick' apart the strands so that they're not tangled and they're all separated. I may look for a tutorial or video tape myself doing it. It really makes the tail appear thick and full. :)

I was taught to always pick a tail also. I grew up showing Morgan's and you never wanted their tails to thin and break so that's why. Now it's just a habit although my mare now has so much tail it wouldn't matter if I brushed it, she wouldn't miss any of it! Ha :) I can't post a pic from my phone but I'll post one when I get on my computer tomorrow. She has a beautiful tail! It very long and full/think all the way to the bottom.

You just use your fingers and separate each strand or is there a tool? I'd love a how-to video! How long did that take you?
