Thanks for the advice!! I started to pull my TB mare's mane this weekend and she could have cared less. I was taking very few hairs at a time and she didn't seem to notice what I was doing. She was just happily munching. However, her mane is quite thick and tends to part and lay on both sides. I think it is beautiful, but there is no way I could braid it for a dressage show I hate for her to lose her locks.

I do the "cheap" clip. I take a pair of scissors and about an inch- inch and a half chunk of mane and twist it all the way down. (This will make the hairs more uneven which will give you a more natural look) I then clip off as much as needed, you can even cut "V" shapes into the hair while you have it twisted to make it look better. I do this for the whole mane and if I have any blocky spots I just go in and snip on angles until it looks better.

If you do this make sure you have a nice SHARP pair of scissors though! It is easier on both of you that way!

Pulling a mane takes forever.. it hurts your fingers, and cutting it without flipping it over looks kind of blocky.

I haven't tried smrobs' dad's method but it sounds much better than pulling!
I can pull a mane to appropriate even showing length in about 20 minutes given the mane isn't a disaster an the horse stands. It takes me days to cut a mane correctly, I always think it looks too "cut" and uneven.
