Pulling manes?

I have been taught to pull a mane, but it was long ago and I only did it once. Does anyone have pictures of what the finished product ought to look like? How short do I go? I want to pull Mag's mane because he's staying so sweaty underneath in this miserable weather, but I don't want to make him look silly. What would the mares say? :P

I don't have pics, but #1 rule don't be in hurry and don't go more than an inch or so in one time. Most horses don't care about pulling the mane. My mare is not happy, but tolerate. And I cut on my other one as she has pretty poor mane.

Sorry, I don't have any good pics either...

Length-wise, about 4 inches is what you're aiming for, give or take half an inch depending on what might better flatter your horse's confo. Any shorter and braiding gets hard, longer and it's hard to make neat little plaits, or tidy bands.

Always pull from underneath, to minimize new hairs regrowing straight up from the top. I like to pull after a good workout, when the pores are most open, only a few hairs at a time. Don't yank, just steady downward pressure until the root releases.

A stubborn horse walks behind you, an impatient one in front of you, but a noble companion walks beside you ~ Unknown

I taught myself how to pull my horse's mane, so im not of much help. If you mess up, who cares? its hair, it grows back. And how mad could anybody possibly mess up pulling a mane. Its not rocket science ;)

How long: I like to be about 3-4 inches, but whatever looks best on your horse

Finished Product: the finished product may vary. My horse's mane stands almost straight up ( because of a huge cowlick he has on the other side of his neck), but I band it down so it doesn't matter.Other horses it will lie flat

Here are some examples:

Pretty simple, so don't stress. Good luck! :)

Thanks for the help! And thanks for the link. I'm loving not only the mane-pulling video, but the plaiting tutorials as well. That's a great help!
