There is no certain "length" a horses tail needs to be in racing. I've see babies w/ short tails, and i've seen tails that drag the ground...as stated above, they are running forward, so they can't step on it....the only time someone messes with it usually is on an off-track (muddy track) they will usually tied up and tape or vet wrap it, so that it doesn't get caked in mud.

Okay, I'm going back to the actual topic.
I think that owners would have common sence to keep there tails to a certian length; however I've seen (some) race-horses with tails kind of "In a knot" and it stays like that.
Eventing, it doesn't matter either. Again, probaly the riders/owners would have common sence to keep it at a good length :)
