Should I clip him??

I'm slightly confused.

I'm thinking of clipping my horses fur, as I'll be working him pretty hard this winter... and he has a huge furry coat.
And I got to thinking, there is NO ONE here that clips their horses fur... like literally, no one.
Even at my old lesson barn, the horses that would be rode everyday and worked pretty hard during the lessons were never clipped either.
I live in Winnipeg (winterpeg), MB, CANADA.. so it is preetty darn cold... maybe that's why? :s
Anyways, my point is... why does no one clip their horses? Do you?
Why should I bother? It's clearly not that important...

I don't show in winter, so I don't bother with it. I only blanket the Thoroughbreds because they don't grow in as thick of coats, and no one gets clipped. I don't see why I would.

I'd like to see what everyone has to say here. I am still mulling over whether or not to body clip my boy. His coat is so deliciously soft and warm, I hate the idea of just buzzing it off! Not to mention he's like 1300 pounds and 17.3. So we're looking at an all day body clipping extravaganza! Ugh.

Is he turned out?

You could always do a trace clip or something similar. Otherwise if he is working up a sweat you need to set aside extra time to cool him out properly. Though, you'll probably want to blanket him if you decide to clip him.

Yes he is turned out during the day. I do set aside time and walk him for quite a long time after a work out... but to get all the sweat off completely it takes hours...
Yeah I'm thinking of just doing a belly & neck clip... and of course I blanket him now anyways.

I assume your winters get pretty bad, so if you clip you'll have to do some kind of blanketing, but I really think it's personal preference, and how quickly your horse is able to cool out after work. It's hard for anyone to know those things but you. I did find this page though, it might help. It covers the different clips and what they are suitable for. I found it really interesting
How Much To Clip

It is actually better to clip them if they get super sweaty during workout because they actually get more chilled that way than keep warm. I don't see a problem at all in doing a low trace clip on him. That way he still has a large majority of his coat to help keep him nice and warm but the areas that get the warmest during workout are clipped so will stay much cooler which will keep him warmer. And will cut down on your coolout time tremendously. You said that you already have a blanket for him too so their won't be any extra cost involved and already prepaired. I say go ahead and do it. But I personally wouldn't do more than a low trace. Full body is really just for if you plan on doing serious showing during the winter.

My horse lives inside at night in a heated barn, so it may be different. He is clipped except for his legs, belly and some of his face.
He gets turned out during the day unless it's colder than about -40 and he wears a heavy stable sheet and a heavy winter blanket with a hood when it gets really cold.
I would not clip a horse that much and then expect him to live outside, 24/7. I might clip some chest and flank hair and that is it!
