Skimpy, weak mane

Does anyone on here have a horse with a pathetic mane? Buzz has a decent tail, but his mane is just terrible. I take good care of it, only brushing it occasionally and very lightly as it tends to fall out. I braid it sometimes as well. Just loose casual braids. I've tried coconut oil, mtg, but nothing seems to make it grow! Last year, I touched his mane and a huge chunk of hair fell out! A few weeks later, another chunk came out. Anyone have suggestions?

Is he by chance an Appaloosa?
If so, it is trait carried by some of the bloodlines.
Some have both a sparce mane and tail, while others will have a good tail and just the mane suffers
Some, have full manes and tails like any other breed, which most of mine do

Sadly, a lot of the time it is breeding. If he is healthy, and you've tried all that, it is likely just genetics. Some breeds certainly have less hair then others. And lines too. I had a APHA gelding, with a AWFUL forelock. It consisted of about 25 hairs. His mane was okay - about average for stock horses (not the ones that get nice manes like some of those reining horses do.) Now I have a Morgan, and her tail drags the ground. Her mane is SO thick. It will not lay if you pull it, unless you majorly thin it out too. I usually just let it get long, and it gets VERY long. It can be frustrating when they dont have good mane genes.

I do! Midnight must have a grand total of 50 hairs, forelock included. Her tail is not necessarily thick, but not thin either. It drags just a centimeter on the ground but her mane is almost non existent. I am thinking of roaching it because there is no hair and then a chunk and then no hair.
