So, my older horse has had some flaky skin issues on the front of his hind legs since I got him many years ago. It isn't a problem, and doesn't seem to progress any further than what it is, but now my mare has gotten it too, and I can't stand seeing it despite all the hours I put in grooming them daily. What it looks like is just a build-up of dead skin under the hair, and when you rub/scratch it, the hair just comes off. New hair will grow, but it will just happen again. It is not anywhere else, just on the front of both back legs on both horses. What I want to know is, does anyone know what exactly this is and how best to treat it?
What I am doing right now is spraying them with Microtek three times a day, and I will spray their leg brushes with a bleach water solution after each use. I am working on washing all their boots, and will disinfect them after each use as well. However, does anyone know of a better product to treat this? I would obviously like to get it gone as soon as possible. By the way, I should add that I did ask my vet about it and she said that it was quite common and not an issue, but is really hard to get rid of.
