Sunburn..

Summer comming quickly and my horse has a big white face that goes all the way around his nose. I use sunscreen alot and am going to try and find a long fly mask to cover as much as possible, but I was woundering if there was other ways, and What are the best brands and sunscreens to use? I use natural and baby sunscreen last year.. But he still got a pretty bad burn.
Thanks. :)

The best thing I've found for my horse's pink nose is Desitin or Beaurdeox's diaper cream. They are so thick that they cover the area for the entire day. I prefer Beaurdeox's.

Generic Desitin (zinc oxide) is what we use.

Keeping inside during the day and turning out only at night is the ONLY foolproof way to prevent sunburn. Desitin applied over Sport-type/waterproof human sunscreen was my second choice when I had mostly-white Paints.

I think a UV fly mask is the most fool proof way, barring he doesn't (or his friends don't) rip them off. No need to apply or put junk all over their faces. Plus there is no need to worry about barn help forgetting or not putting enough sun protection on.

Turn out at night works too but obviously that's dependent on your situation and personal preferences. If he has pink skin over most of his body I'd keep them in during the day.

me too works great along with fly mask although it tends to muck up the mask

Cashel long nose insect masks totally stopped my two pink nose horses from getting sunburn - I never found any sunscreen that really worked

Baby Huey burned last year so badly that skin cracked and bled..he had shelter but one that could not lock up.

He was moved into stall to north and kept in.

I built a run in with 2 stalls. Split paddock down middle, so Kola, who is crippled, and Baby Huey can have a stall each. And they have gates so will be shutting them up.

Kola has photosensitivity, which causes liver problems and death, from something he ate 2 years ago, interacting with sunlight, so he can't be out on grass now for most part.

And Baby Huey was so burned last year, he will be in flymask, (Duravet) and locked up this summer.

I've used Desitin on him, but just didn't get enough results with it?

And glad to see someone mention masks with noses, because was thinking about those.

Ha, your horse looks quite a bit like Baby Huey.

I use coconut butter! As natural as you can get and has an spf equivalent of about 6. My filly has an entirely pink nose and I found her skin breaking in the summer and she was always standing with her nose in the water bucket (I found this behavior strange at first). I didn't want to use regular sunscreen so I found this a refreshing alternative. Before commercial sunscreens were put on the shelves, coconut butter was the normal sunscreen and people are apparently still using it in the tropics. I've also used the Burt's Bees sunscreen on her (spf 15) which worked as well but I'm worried about some of the chemicals in it. Don't know if this helped at all but good luck! :)
