Tail falling out

Has anyone ever experienced something like this?

My girls tail hair falls outs, roots and all, it isnt breaking off just falling out roots and all when her tail is brushed/washed/plaited.

She's very healthy so I don't get why this is, her mane, forelock and body hair are all great, shiny and healthy. Her tail is shiny too just loosing lots of hair.

Any ideas on what to stop this, or opinions on what could cause this?

Thanks in advance

It could be that the braids are too tight or you could just be seeing normal hair loss. They lose a certain amount of hair from their tails daily. When the tail is in a braid, the hair is trapped and doesn't come off until the tail is unbraided. Sometimes normal hair loss can really accumulate and seem like a lot.

If you're trying to grow out the tail I would try conditioning it. Lots of people here use MTG, coconut oil, or something similar. Run a search and you'll find the threads.

Selenium toxicity can cause this.

It isn't braided normally just for shows.

At home she wears it all natural!
Do you know what the equivalent of MTG would be in Australia? Cowboy magic?

If it was selenium toxicity what causes it and why would only she have it?

Selenium can be in the hay and is in bagged feed. Blood work would determine if this is the cause. But let's look at something cheaper to start. Are you using equine products to wash and condition the tail. If so switch to those designed for horses. We can use their hairdressing products but most of ours are too strong for them. He may be reacting to conditioner if you are leaving it in rather than thoroughly rinsing it out. Hope this helps. His tail shouldn't be washed very often as it removes protective skin bacteria.

Yeah she is washed with equine products. We have to wash her tail more often because it needs to be clean when we show :/
