Tail Question

Alright, so I ride my aunt's Quarter Horse and later on plan to show him. I think that's why I'm a bit unsatisfied by his tail. For some reason, it's really thin and parts of it you can see the skin where hair should be. Any suggestions as to products that will get his hair to grow?

Is it a possibility he could be rubbing it? If he is rubbing it, you need to find out why and then address that problem (A common reason is the horse being wormy.) Most of the times if it is spotty, and you can see his skin, he is rubbing it.

Some products to use (Once you find out and address the possible problem) would be Mane N' Tail Grower (MTG) or coconut oil. However, these will just nourish the hair and encourage it to grow, genetics is what will limit the length...

What you really ought to do is wrap the tail's base with vet wrap (professionals choice I believe has a velcro one); make sure it isn't too tight or you could hurt circulation which will not only be bad for the horse but also inhibit folicle stimulation and growth ultimately. Also bag the bottom half of the tail after braiding it. I use cowboy magic detangler and shine which adds a lot of extra conditioner plus I use a spray on leave in conditioner about 2-3x/week which a human one I got from the grocery store. Also it is very important while rehabing or growing a tail to not brush it very often as it'll increase your odds of pulling and breaking hairs. What I do instead is I use the detangler and brush with a stiff body brush the ends of my horses tail and pick out anything that could be tangled in it. If your horse has a light colored tail as mine does (white) to keep it from staining I isolate where there is discoloration and spray cowboy magic stain remover directly on the stain let it set and then brush again with the body brush until its at least a light yellow color so that way when I need groom her for a show she wont have any stains that I couldn't get out with goop or bluing shampoo.

Then whala...

Also make sure your horses tail hasn't got any flakey skin underthe hair or you could just be dealing with an itchy skin irritation which you could get that stuff for dry scalps that you just dot in undert he hair and massage in which will fix the rubbing's source then after that you can work on regrowth. :)
