Thin mane and tail help.

I've just brought a little welsh section A pony as a companion for my other horse. He is 3 years old and was rescued from the meat market. (I am posting another thread on the training topic thread as he is very hard to handle and quite wild)
His mane and tail though are very thin and limp. His mane has some quite long parts and then some very short parts like it has been hacked at with a pair of siccors! His tail to is very short and whispy (although im not sure if this is just because he is still young?) Is there and conditioner or vitamins I could give him to strenghten his mane? Or should I cut it all to the same length? Or just leave it till it grows longer then straighten it out?

We use MTG, you can get it at Tack Stores. It smells awful but works really well to grow tails and manes. Since it isn't fly season (at least not here) you could cut it back to even it out. If it is still fly season where you are I would leave as much length as you could.

Depending on what I want to achieve. The most important advice I can give you, is to just leave his mane and tail, don't touch it unless you adding conditioner or detangling it by hand. Your horse's hair should never see a brush. Using one will guarantee you ripping a lot of hair out.

MTG and Showsheen are 2 products I use regularly. It just depends what it is you are trying to achieve. Any leave in conditioner will help keep his mane and tail tangle free and make it more slick which helps prevent getting stuff caught it in.

Does your horse rub his tail? It's another big source of hair loss. Make sure he is de-workmer and that you keep his dock conditioned to help prevent the skin from becoming dry and becoming itchy.

I never brush my horses mane or tail with a comb hardly ever. The only time I do it is when I know there are no knots in it and I'm very carefull not to pull out the hair. I would definitely use MTG. Also, you could bag his tail. I just used a long tube sock, and cut the end to where there are 2 strips and that works great! I hope you can grow them out real nice.

My friend uses a human paddle brush on her horses mane and since it is meant to be gentle on long human hair it works wonders on manes and tails and goes very quickly.

Flax Seed oil is good to get manes, tails, and the entire coat glowing and healthy. Canter Mane and Tail is also really good.

I would definitely trim his mane to an all even level.

Braid the tail to keep it from being further broken, or caught on anything in his pasture, and condition it regularly. Get him onto a good diet, and worming regimine, and that should be all he should need to get him back into shape.
