    I rug all my horses from the beginning of cold weather/end of summer coat - They can all still fluff up and look like polar bears if they are cold. If I need a short coat, I clip or would use lights.

    Sorry, forgot this bit - Horses grow coats according to the length of the daylight, not the temperature. That's why keeping a horse under lights keeps their summer coat, and why rugging alone won't prevent the coat from growing.

    All my horses are turned out 24 x 7 so all where neck rugs - I like them on for a few reasons - keeps the mane flatter, keeps them clean, keeps them warmer, stops the rain going down the neck line

    As it goes into spring I start turning them out without them - and then in summer they have sun sheets with neck rugs usually

    A hood is the ones that cover there faces that hae holes for the eyes - unless you are a hard core showie personally wouldnt bother :)
