Hi
Quick question regarding clipping my yearling cob.
Do you's think its still to cold to clip my cob. I'm from North East England and the weather is still a little cold.
Are you a dedicated rugger? Once you clip it will be up to you to regulate his temperature as his hair will no longer keep him warm. Posted via Mobile Device
my theory is if it's too cold for you to be out in a lightweight shirt (even at night) then it's still to cold to clip. Especially for a youngster.
I have two minis that I want to clip so bad! But we still get cold snaps some nights so I have to wait a couple more weeks. It's killing me but it'll be worth the wait.
Thanks for your replys
I'm going to follow your advice and wait a little longer and hopefully the weather should get warmer soon, note the word "should" hehe.
With my cob, I found clipping her with a guard works very well for those early spring shows. I don't like to blanket as I think it's unhealthy for the horse but, found that if I clip her but, leave about 3/4" - 1.5" it looks very sharp but, still keeps her warm at night. She also very quickly regrew what I trimmed off of her. Though, not sure about your climate, clipping now might be clipping into her summer coat.
If you clip now you will spoil your horses summer coat. Never clip after the last week in January.
The coat shines because the hair tip is rounded and reflects the light, When you clip you have a straight edge at the end which no longer reflects the light and so looks dull.
The only colour you can get away with clipping year round is a grey as they generally don't visibly shine.
