With my cob, I found clipping her with a guard works very well for those early spring shows. I don't like to blanket as I think it's unhealthy for the horse but, found that if I clip her but, leave about 3/4" - 1.5" it looks very sharp but, still keeps her warm at night. She also very quickly regrew what I trimmed off of her. Though, not sure about your climate, clipping now might be clipping into her summer coat.
