Trouble Pulling Mane

I have been working with an off-the-track thoroughbred recently and am preparing him for a show. His owner asked me to pull his mane for the show but he wont cooperate! If I try it in a stall he backs into the wall and goes in circles. I tried putting him in cross-ties but he reared and broke the ties. His owner even tried and she couldn't get him to cooperate. Now every time that someone even touches near his mane he backs up and gets frightened. His mane is super thick and grows on both sides so we need to get it pulled really bad. Any suggestions would be realllly helpful. Thanks!

I would work him really well first, then try. He may be the sort of horse you're going to have to start by using a cheater and blading it with a comb that has a blade in it. Getting them good and worked out helps the hair come out easy as well as the horse being tired.
