washing and repairing blankets?

Hopefully this is the right place to post this...

Is it mandatory that you wash blankets in a front loading washing machine? Lacey's blanket says "front loading machines only" and my family has a top loading one... I figure it's probably similar to washing a comforter and we do that aaaaallllll the time, but I don't want to just try it since Lacey's blanket is kinda a major monetary investment for me currently. Haha
I know to hang dry it so it won't shrink in the dryer but washing it? Help?

Lacey also tore about a 4in X 4in hole in it right in the middle of her back... It's only the top layer, none of the blanket innards are hurt... What's the best way to fix that? My mom is super good at sewing and she's going to help me but I want guidelines. Haha

Also, once I wash the blanket, will it need to be completely re-waterproofed? I know the area we sew will need to be, but the rest of it?

Thanks! =)

I am curious about this to. I only have a top loading washing machine and I would like to wash my mare's blanket, it's all caked in mud right now.

We wash all out rugs in a top loader. Never had any problems with it
