What is the best way to do a jumpers mane and tail?

I am hoping to compete in hunt seat equitation over fences with my mustang this fall. Her mane and tail are extremely long and thick and I dont want to cut them, but I know you have to do something with them in english classes. Here is a picure of her, and if you have any idea what I should do, feel free to let me know!

Depending on the rating of the horse show, you will probably need to braid both the mane and tail. I would call the show management office and ask if either a French braid or a Continental braid is allowed in place of Button braids. I've never seen anything but a Button braid for hunt seat equitation in Illinois. It doesn't hurt to ask the show office though. Hope that helps.

Depending on the level of showing, you may not even need to braid. Especially if you're doing equitation, that is on you not the horse. Also, she is a Mustang! Its their "breed standard" to have a thick mane and tail. You could french braid it (And show off her brand if she has one) or diamond braid it. You could even scallop braid it if you have that much time. And just a regular old hunter tail braid will work for the tail. Its awesome that its so thick but remember to take very small pieces or else it wont look as great. You may also want "bang" the bottom but that's up to you: you trim the long hairs and make it more flat across the bottom. It makes it neater and look more full. But don't hack away, just a little snip snip is all you need :)
