Thanks! I think I will go with clear, I googled some horses and it does look really odd, I never paid much attention before, and plus I don't have a stead hand, I would make him look terrible!

I guess I'm wrong then. I don't think you have to tell other people that how they're grooming their horses looks horrible though. I am just a local show nobody though OP have fun, and make sure you keep the lid screwed on TIGHT, no matter what hoof polish always seems to find a way to leak all over everything.

I guess its really just in the eye of the beholder. I think I may go with black, or I may try both before the show to see which I like more. I am a local now nobody to! Thanks for telling me about the lid, with my luck it would spill everywhere!

Googling some more.. I think black would look good on a bay. I don't think it would look as good on a paint with mostly white, or a palomino. I think I may actually go with black. To many little decisions!

I like black on darker colored horses with socks, solid dark horses, and darker paints. I should add that I think it looks silly on light grays and pallys. The horse I use it on is my sorrel with coronets and he looks nice. I bag my hoof polish in a plastic baggy to prevent spills after I learned the hard way and it ended up ALLLLL over my trailer. That wasn't a fun thing to discover.

I will make sure to bag it, since I am going with my barn, and its NOT my trailer!!

You can kinda see in this pic his back hooves have clear polish on them with his white hooves. It would look silly otherwise. His front hooves are stripped, so clear on the front too.

Sorry to hijack, but what about a buckskin paint with 4 high whites and striped hooves? I've always used black on Henny and never thought it looked bad. I'm just torn between the two because of his striped hooves.

Years ago I made the mistake of using black polish on light hooves OH MY GOODNESS it looked awful, I was almost embarassed to enter the show ring especially if you don't have a 100% steady / experienced hand. I still cringe when I think about it, never ever again!

I was told that black polish was only acceptable if all four hooves are black, because otherwise it would draw attention to the odd hoof out. I've not used polish yet; just little fun shows.
