I have a draft cross and her winter coat gets extremly long, i'm talking a good ince and a half. Last year when i rode her in the winter it sorta pulled some of her hair out around her girth. Never did any damage but they grew back in lighter, well at least i think they did i cant really remember now. But, I was thinking a bib clip. We have a heated barn so i wouldn't have to blanket her when she is in, but when she is out would i have to? And if i did would i still have to blanket her when she was out if i just did her girth area, just because she gets so hot and sweaty with a blanket on. Oh and PS i don't show in the winter, just training for the summer

i have a draft cross too & the first year he looked like a catterpiller! I gave him a blanket-clip & he was fine. The next year I started blanketing him anytime it dropped below 50 & he grew a more normal winter coat. I have been doing that ever since & he does much better now riding in the shorter coat.

If you just do a bib clip, he'll be fine not being blanketed at all. When I was riding my dads old horse over winter more cause my horse was injured, I just did a bib clip. He was old, so I wanted him to retain as much of his coat as possible, but I did need to shave the sweaty parts, so bib clip it was. I did blanket him sometimes when it got really cold, just because he was so old (35 years), but it wasn't necessary.
