I notice that my horses with extra thick coats start shedding sooner than the ones with thinner coats. Anyone else? Possibly the horses that are more sensitive grow more/thicker coat and start losing it sooner?

Hm... I dont think so...
My horse has had a med winter blanket on all winter and if it got colder i put liners on him. So he was always nice and warm and he had a decent ish winter coat... and hes still shedding... They come out easily... esp when I curry..

My boy is shedding a LOT. I curried him for a good 15 minutes on each side and just kept brushing away huge rolls of hair. Its the worst along his spine and on his butt right now.

mine isnt shedding yet, thank god as he doesnt have a thick winter coat to begin with. over the past 2 weeks we were getting +temps and it will be dropping to -15 celcius by the end of the week. my one dog on the other hand is blowing his coat. he did this last year when we hit +5 for a week in january, basically the same weird weather we have been having this year.

My horse started shedding last week, but now she's stopped. xP I wish she'd keep it up because we have a show coming up soon and she's going to be miserable there (it's a hot area) if she still has a lot of her winter coat left.

They shed according to daylight it doesn't matter how rugged they are, if their bodies are saying it's time to start shedding they start shedding...nothing we can do about it.

A lot of show people will set the barn lights on a timer to "trick" the horse into thinking that the days are getting longer and encourage them to shed earlier.

Always remember that feeling of looking at a big, open country over the ears of a good horse, seeing a new trail unwind ahead of you, and that ever-spectacular view from the top of the ridge!!! Follow my training blog:

I'm in California, and just noticed Sunny shedding some on his rear. It has been in the 40's, no real winter weather, so that could be the cause. Of course, yesterday and today we had snow (2 ft) and freezing temps!

It's the little things that drive me wild...
