This is a friends mare, kept here for the summer.
Wednesday afternoon the mare looked "off" to me. My husband and the help here thought I was seeing things so I chalked it up to being 98* and no one felt great.
Her owner rode her yesterday without noticing anything. Yesterday evening I went to move this mare into a different pasture & saw several lumps on her neck and chest. One lump was open in her throat latch area that looked for all the world like a cut right where the halter would lay. I cleaned her up, put a call into the vet who said it was more than likely bug irritations and put her back in her old pasture "just in case".
This morning I came out and two of the lumps on her neck were open and draining. As I cleaned her up clumps of hair would fall off, there are two more lumps on her chest. The vet IS coming late this evening but what do you suspect?
She does not have a fever but seems pretty grumpy. Shes eating and drinking fine. Everything else is normal.
I have never dealt with Pigeon Fever (I'm honestly not even sure it comes up this far in our area?!) and they seem to small for that to be it? But on top of what this mare is experiencing, another mare here has what appears to be cellulitis. Which I know can also be a sign of Pigeon Fever. Again, I didn't think it was in our area though and now I'm sure I'm just panicking. The way this year has gone around here... nothing surprises me anymore.
