im so upset about all of this. i wasnt going to post anything because i didnt want to think about it, but im just so aggrivated.....

thursday, one of our new horses, Canvas Master died on us. it was horrible. something i never want to see again. we had gotten him in tuesday night along with another horse, and met him wednesday morning. he was sooooo sweet. 6yr old bay gelding with a big star and a white ankle behind. he did everything right, he was like an old old horse. he made a lot of money too. had over $150,00 made lifetime, had made $45,000 of it last year, and had $16,000 made already this year. he was a good classy horse.

wednesday he jogged, was very very calm and easy to handle. thursday when we got him ready and he went out and jogged my cousin commented on his behavior when he came in. he said he was "pulling and rammy" and "hiking behind like he had bad stifles". it was odd, but we bathed him and let him rest a little while. later on we pulled him out and put him i crossties to shoe him. we had just gotten the last shoe on when he started to weave and blow in the crossties. my cousin and i told his son to walk him a little while to see if he would come out of it ok. we unhooked the crossties and he started to stumble. he went around in a circle and fell on top of my cousins son (whos 19, but only 5'4" and 140lbs) into a metal stall door/cement wall. he collapsed on the ground and that was it. he layed there for about 15min while we tried to get him up. i knew he wasnt going to make it as soon as he started to stumble before because his gums were white. he started to urinate himself and his eyes were blank. he finally stopped breathing. i stayed with him about a half hour petting him and trying not to cry.

here is my biggest peeve. this happened at the racetrack. there is SUPPOSED to be a vet there AT ALL TIMES!!!!!! had there been a vet there, im not saying Canvas would have made it, but he atleast could have been spared the 15min of suffering he went through!

i spoke to a friend of mine at the track the next day. she said a friend of hers horse died a few days before from colic. she said they called everywhere but there were no vets to come and help. they called a few placed and they got the answer "we dont do horses".... ok well you cant give ANY help? or referr ANYONE?! their poor horse suffered as well, when a vet could have atleast spared them the suffering....

im infuriated.... these poor horses are suffering because no one is there for them..... RIP Canvas Master......

What a horrible story to read... :( I keep like 3 horse vets # in my cell just in case. Knock on wood we'll never need one!

Just wondering, did you find out what happened to him? Such a fast death is just a shock!

So so sorry to hear that! How terrible! In NY does the racing commission have mandatory autopsies for horses that have been racing recently or are stabled at a track? At least you could get some answers...
We only have mandatory vets on site during the race card - but even when thay are not racing, there's one or two. It's horrible no one could help you!

Isn't there some committee that you could go to about this and they could either enforce the rule for a vet to be there at all times or punish the vet who isn't there while on duty? That is just terrible and you are right in feeling angry, that makes me furious too.

Kitten_val - we dont really know. could have been a few things. flipped his heart, had a heart attack, heat stroke..... we dont know. im leaning towards his heart though just because it was so fast and the weaving and blowing.

Shesinthebarn - autopsies depend on the situation. if it seems like someone may have used a drug on the horse that killed it. or if it seems like he was abused to death.... im not sure what out regulations are on vets though, personally, they SHOULD be there at all times, but im not sure if thats what they agree with.

smrobs - im trying to figure out official regulations and such as of now....

morganshow11- i had him one day. unless i was going to take pics of him laying there dead, i didnt have time to take any. and he was a STB racehorse.... i really dont believe you read much of my post....
