Abcess Still Hasn't Popped

My Thoroughbred went lame about 10 days ago, limping real hard on his right front leg. We called the vet and the farrier out to look at him and they both agreed that he has an abcess. The farrier found the spot, and dug into the sole and used Iodine Crystals on it to encourage the abcess to surface. It still hasn't popped out yet, although he seems to be in a little less pain than he was a week ago. How long does it normally take for an abcess to pop? This is my ferst encounter with this and it's killing me!

First, don't panic about it. It'll burst when it's ready. It's just the hoof's way of healing itself. If you want to encourage it, try soaking the foot in warm water with 1/2 cup epsom salt. It'll also keep it clean while the nasty stuff is working it's way out.

Thanks Puck. I just don't know how long I should expect to wait, and you have helped with that! Thanks again.

The three my horse has had all popped very quickly. I have a friend who's horse took 3 weeks. No way to really tell until you see all the gross goo come out!

I had my yearling go lame in the hind leg. I called my farrier and explained the condition. He said it was either abcess or stone bruise. And soak in espom salts. I gave him bute and stalled him for few weeks.

I after soaking I took about a cup of barn wheat and 3 tb spoons of espom salts added some hot water to make a paste, the bran wheat holds the heat. I than took a diaper and put the paste in tthe bottom of it and duck taped it onto hhis hoof, 2 weeks later he was running around and has not gone lame again its been almost a year!

Mine took about 4 days to come through, 4 days poulticing, and about 5 days with poultice off, waiting for the gap to heal more before riding/working.

It takes time! However, if the horse is moving better, have you considered that it may have already popped?? Are you keeping a poultice on the hoof to see if it has or not?

I strongly suggest, however, that you don't sniff the pus bit- like I did. Gag.

Not all of them 'pop'. I have not decided if the ones that I have had that resolved without popping out on the coronet were just stone bruises that were mis-diagnosed or if the horse's immune system kicked into gear and and they absorbed the mess.

They CAN absorb abscesses in other places just like they absorb hematomas.

The only real way to know if there is an abscess for sure is to draw blood and see if there is an elevated white count.

Bute, antibiotics and any other anti-inflamatory only delays the process. Hot soaks and poultices usually speed it up -- if there is an actual pocket of puss.

Are you still soaking to try and draw the abscess out?

No, I haven't been soaking it yet. The vet told me to wait until it came to the surface to start that. I thought soaking and polteice treratments were for after it pops out. But I see now that I need to be soaking it. Thanks to all of you for your great advice.

That would certainly explain why it's still there then!
