Question Abscess.?

My barn doesn't believe in pellets and I have used them my whole life. They believe letting their horses wade in their own manure is the best bedding. He was cramped up in a stall for 5 or 6 months before I finally started taking care of him. However for awhile he has been really sketchy about giving me his hind left leg. When he walks, people tell me its his hind right leg. In my opinion he is favoriting his hind left leg more though. Anyways I think he may have an abscess. The people at the barn told me he kicks out and probably got hurt kicking. I am a strong believer in a horse is not going to do more than he can handle. He crosses his hind legs with every step he takes and I gave him some bute to help him cope with the obvious pain. I picked all of his feet. Felt no heat. But his rear left leg I can't thoroughly pick because it is as if his hoof is grown into a solid hoof with nothing to pick out near the top.

I think you need to do two several things
First off I would find a new barn with better a management philosophy
Secondly You need to get a good farrier out to look at that hoof - without photos there's no way we can see what's going on but it really does sound as if he needs professional attention because all sorts of things could be going wrong and while we're second guessing he could be getting worse

abscess, abscesses, bute, hoof, hoof care
