    One possibility (of so many until it can be narrowed down through testing, etc.) is he has a minor injury, probably to the suspensory ligaments, that goes unnoticed most of the time but shows up when he steps on uneven ground just the right way (well, technically I suppose it would be the wrong way). If you're going to pursue the matter further via a vet consultation, I would be interested in hearing what it actually is. Hope it is nothing serious - good luck.
