Apple Cider Vinegar to Combat flies and others???

Just wondering if this is true, if others have tried and found to be helpful or not in using an amount of apple cider vinegar in the water to help with the flies and mosquitoes biting the horse and if so how much to the water? I have a 55 gallon drum

I have never heard about the apple cider vinegar but maybe this will help with your flies we get our horses special mineral blocks for there pastures that have ingredients in them that kill mosquitoes, biting flies, and there babies if they bite you horse. It doesn't phase the horse but when the flies land and bite them the blood is toxic to the flies. When we got them to begin with it all but got rid of flies at our barn completely. Hope that was helpful. :)

googled the same question and it appears it really does work. I will surely try it, it appears you can actually spray it on the horse too. I think you may want to dilute it with water if I remember correctly, but I really think they were saying it wouldnt hurt the horse at all to just spray some on them too I guess here and there

Green Broke
I heard you spray it on the outside, Horses tend to have enough stomach acid problems, I don't see how introducing more strong acid to their diet is a good thing

Ive read a lot of good things other places but I also read that it prohibits the growth of bacteria, which in many cases is good but don't horses need good bacteria in their stomachs too? Idk just throwing it out there for anyone who does!

I use it, I put it in his feed about a 1/4 of a cup each feed.
I found it helped with weight, he has a really shiny coat as well now (that may be from sunflower seeds as well) and now that I think about it he doesnt get as many mozzie bites as he used to.
He still gets them but no way as bad.

Just throwing this out there from what y'all have written putting any amount of vinegar in the food or water it would seem to me that it would discourage either drinking or eating it. I know mine wouldn't like it they want even eat the green apple bute it has to be molasses flavor, lol. I would rather spray it on so the horse still has regular tasting water to drink so he doesn't get dehydrated or not eat and get under weight. That's my opinion but I have picky horseys to please. :)

Yeah I think that unless I had a second water supply I wouldnt put it in there incase one or more of the horses didnt like it, also then you don't really know how much they are actually consuming. Assumingly they will eat it in grain though (at least a lot of the horses) since there are people who feed it, otherwise no one would be feeding it. My horse is picky too though so who knows if she would even have a taste! Im still on the fence about it though, maybe I will ask my vet about it, I will see him soon!

I give my horse 1/4 cup of ACV everyday in his grain and it really keeps flies off. Not all of them but it really does help. I have a friend who has a horse that is allergic to flies and she feeds him garlic and that works about as well as ACV. I also mix ACV in with fly spray to make it last longer.
