    Arthritis?

Hi everyone, Well lady ( my 10 year old OTTB ) is who I am concerned about. Last time I was at the stables her left hip bones kept popping! I'm not sure if its because of the cold weather or because I haven't worked with her lately... I would touch her hip and it didn't seem to hurt her when I touched it, but id rather not ride her if it will cause her pain.. is there anything I can give her for arthritis? Is it possible she has arthritis since she is an ex racer? I will be getting a vet soon but would like to see what you all think.. Its starting to get real cold here in New Mexico so I am going to be buying her a blanket soon. Anyways just some questions :) thank you in advance..

How much did she race? This could give you a lot more of an answer regarding the wonder about arthritise.

I would not lunge her, that is hard on the joints if they are inflamed and sore or arthritic.

Long walks, longer warms up, stretching all four legs lighty before riding will help increase the blood low to warm up the area and make it a little eaiser on the joints.

Depending on what the vet says you fan do so many things. For maintiance cause of the harder work for a draft horse (friesain) my trainer goes to costco and grinds up the human MSM pills and gives that to her in grain. I can get the dose amount if that's something your intrested in doing, it's the cheapest pourest way to get MSM that we have found :)

    Good luck!

Woah, there's an even cheaper way to get MSM? I thought it was crazy cheap at $0.13/day (10 g per day, $22.95 for a 4 lb bucket from SmartPak)

I'd definitely talk to your vet to see if s/he recommends putting your horse on a preventive joint supplement even if she doesn't currently have arthritis. The early age that OTTBs are put into heavy training does tend to predispose them to a variety of problems, including arthritis.

MSM has done wonders for my QH. For $25 it lasts about 2 - 2 1/2 months. Don't remember the brand, but pure MSM.
