    Athena's New & Improved Diet

After reading the thread 'back to basics on feeding', I've decided it's about time to get rid of the sweet feed and on to a more healthy diet for Athena.

Right now she gets 2 flakes of Grass/Alfalfa Mix at night if she's in. Otherwise she's eats off a round bale all day. There's no grass at the moment, all snow. She gets about half a coffee can of sweet feed am + pm. I've owned her for a little over 5 years, and this has more or less been the same diet for all those years. Right now I keep her at a place, where the lady has it in her head that every horse needs grain. It will be interesting to see how she reacts to this change as well.

So if I slowly switch her over to 1/2 a can of alfalfa pellets, add a vitamin supplement, and have her given more flakes of hay at night if she's in, would that be all she needs? Nothing I'm missing out on?

Look into a ration balancer if her diet is all hay/grass.

I would suggest weighing your half-can of pellets and seeing how much you are actually giving. Different feeds have different weight by volume so you could be underfeeding one feed or over feeding another when using the half-can measurement system. Once you know how the weight of your feed you can use the suggested feeding chart to determine how large or small of a scoop is right for your horse.

Agree with thermapack - weighing feed is easier to understand how much you are feeding. But your feed program sounds great! It is a lot like what I feed. I add a daily probiotic and flaxseeds, but that is me. This topic has been discussed extensively, so you can search the posts and find TONS of info.
