Barbed wire

I Have a 2 year old filly who seems to be impossible to keep out of the barbed wire she is running on a full 160 acres and still manages to cut herself up. Is the grass really greener on the other side or is she just bored? Lol. Electric fence is not an option and neither is wood the land is too large. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Barbed wire should never be an option. Horses kill themselves on it, can get tetnus, and hurt themselves VERY badly. I think it would be cheeper to replace at least some of the fencing than to have to pay skyrocketed medical bills. Tape fencing isn't that expensive I don't think.

Is she running into the wire or just getting cut with it?

Alot of people here are anti bobwire so be prepared to get bashed.

I don't think taping in 160 acres is a good option. Is she alone? Could you break it into smaller sections and use tape fence with a solar electric thing?

Yea, why not break it up? That's what we did with our pastures, only we put in Vinal fenceing, best desion ever!

Ha, I was stupid enough to take Roxxi out and not Daizy out of what we call "Snickers' Pasture" (my first pasture for my first pony) and Daizy FLiPPEd out. She ran right into the 3 strand BARBEDWIRE fence, had 4, 7 in. Cuts. (just the skin THANK GOD) this was in the end of Sept. NOW she has NO SCARES.. my dad was freaking out about it. BUT I learned a GOOD lesson from that!! I will put Daizy in a barbedwire fence as long as Roxxi is BY HER SIDE!!

I aint against barbedwire. I just don't want to put Daizy by her self in Barbedwire!

Is she running with other horses? Could they be bullying her and pushing her into the fence? Are you sure it's the barb and not other horses, other hazards, etc? We have barb on one or two sides of our paddock - It is a cattle property. I've never had an issue with the horses not respecting it, except at feed time leaning into it. We are gradually trying to replace it with a hotwire, as it ruins the front of rugs when they itch!

Have you tried tying ribbon down the wire so she is aware it's there?

I would probably section off a MUCH smaller section of the field - say 3-4 acers with a strand of electric with a solar powered box - even with temp. Stakes, or put up a strand of electric along a corner and then box in the other two sides and do three strands of electric - electric with solar is really cheap to put up and maintain - and eventually she might learn a healty respect for fence in general and when you let her back out, she might just accept boundaries.
