So, I feel a little dumb only asking this now, but it just struck me the other day. When we first weaned our colt, I had him on a 14% complete feed because I grain all of my horses during heavy riding season. As things have slowed down over the last 2 months, I have transitioned all of our horses to a good quality hay diet...without thinking about increased demands of a growing foal, I did the same with him.
I realized the other day, that I might be costing him future health by depriving him of some needed nutrients for growth. He looks great, but I assume he should be getting more targeted nutrients (without making him fat).
Anyway...what is the usual & best diet for a foal after weaning?
