Bird pooping in water butt!

Hello all, I have this on going issue with birds fouling in my horses water butt. How do I stop this? I am sure bird poop is not health, so this issue wastes a lot of water too.

BB gun? But seriously, perhaps moving the water or putting a covering over with an opening for the horses heads?

I like the BB gun idea. haa! Could you explain the cover idea with a hole in it or am I being stupid?

Kind of like an automatic waterer. Just have a piece of plywood over the top with a hold cut so they can get their face to the water. You just have to make sure it is secured to the water container and that the water is kept full enough they can reach. I'm guessing you are using a stock tank of some sort?

Its a big round water butt with a curved lip around the outside. I suppose that might work, as the birds would not be able to grip a flat surface. I have some boarding up the yard that would do it. I will let you know tomorrow if it works. I will probably have a flock of dead birds in the butt in the morning.... either way I would have stopped them. Cheers and I will let you know

Andy, no offense, but are you taking about a water BUCKET? Your posts call it a water butt. I don't know if this is an auto-correct problem or a difference in terminology. Either way I keep chuckling every time I read "water butt".

I'm not sure you can keep birds from drinking out of your buckets. They should be dumped daily anyway, so you're going to waste any water that the horses haven't drank. If you're talking about a trough, then it should be dumped weekly.

LOL, I have no problem with the term, in the UK it describes one of these.
